GHCA boys notch first victories

The Houlton and Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys received early Christmas gifts last week as both squads notched their first wins of the season. The Shires followed that up with a second win against Mattanawcook Academy and are now 2-2 on the year. GHCA’s record is now 1-3.

The Southern Aroostook boys continue their impressive campaign and are now 4-0 on the year with a win over Easton. Hodgdon improved to 3-1 on the year, while East Grand is 0-2 and Katahdin is 0-4.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday, that were reported to the newspaper.

SACS 80, Easton 69 — At Easton Friday, Nolan Altvater led four Warriors in double figures with 22 points as SACS rolled past Easton. Jackson Mathews tossed in 21 points, Tyler Batchelder scored 17 points and Rob Lillis had 11.

Jake Flewelling paced Easton with 32 points.

Houlton 71, Mattanawcook Academy 52 — At Lincoln Friday, the Shires picked up their second consecutive win as the team beat MA on the road. Individual results from the game were not reported.

GHCA 51, East Grand 30 — At Danforth Thursday, GHCA’s Isaac Potter had 15 points to lead all players, while Cole Winslow chipped in 12 as Greater Houlton Christian Academy secured its first win of the season.

Philip Farley paced the Vikings with 12 points, while Brady McEwen added 11.

GHCA led 6-4 in the first quarter, but the Vikings went up 15-12 at halftime. A strong third quarter propelled GHCA back on top 32-21.

Stearns 51, Katahdin 76 — At Stacyville Thursday, Hunter Craig drained 30 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Katahdin past Stearns of Millinocket. Brody Guiggey and Devin McGraw each had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars.

Andrew Daigle netted 14 points and Trenton Goody for Stearns.

Katahdin led 25-15, 44-23 and 66-34 at the quarter breaks.

Fort Kent 53, Hodgdon 58 — At Hodgdon Thursday, Kevin McAfee scored 15 points and Daden Palmer added 12 as the Hawks soared past Fort Kent. Caleb Delisle and Jacob Daigle both had 15 for Fort Kent.

The visiting Warriors took an early two point lead after one and expanded it to six points at the half. The Hawks outscored the Warriors 18-6 in the third to take a six point lead into the fourth quarter and held on for the five-point win.

Houlton 36, Caribou 30 — At Caribou Wednesday, Dec. 21, the Shires picked up their first win of the season as Cameron Graham tossed in 14 points and Jacob Worthley added seven.

Alex Bouchard sparked Caribou with 13 points, while Parker Deprey had 12.

“I was really pleased with our defense,” Houlton coach Tim Brewer said. “The guys showed a little grit in picking up our first win. Hopefully this can springboard us to a few more.”
