Girls squads stay busy during break

It was a busy week of basketball as girls squads stayed active during the Christmas break with a bundle of games. And with the first month of basketball now in the books, teams are starting to establish their dominance.

Houlton improved to 5-0 on the season and is currently fourth in Class B North. The Shires play Washington Academy Saturday and will have a key matchup with John Bapst (6-2, and No. 2 in the region) at home Monday, Jan. 9.

Hodgdon improved to 2-6 on the season and is slowly working its way up the standings. The Hawks are now the No. 14 seed in Class C North, but will need to get to the No. 12 spot if they are to make the playoffs.

In Class D North, Southern Aroostook improved to 4-0 Monday with a win over Katahdin. The Warriors are presently third in the region and are scheduled to face No. 1 Easton (5-2) Wednesday.

East Grand (2-2) is currently in the eighth seed, while Katahdin (1-6) is ninth.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Katahdin 46, Southern Aroostook 66 — At Dyer Brook Monday, Southern Aroostook raced to a 16-0 lead and held off a second half surge from Katahdin to beat the Cougars.

Makaelyn Porter led Southern Aroostook with 27 points, while Sydney Brewer scored 17 and Kylie Vining chipped in 14.

For Katahdin, Haley Landry and Georgia Landry each scored 14 points.

SACS led 16-0, 33-18 and 47-37 at the quarter breaks.

East Grand 21, Ashland 30 — At Ashland Dec. 31, Sarah Stoddard tossed in 10 points but it was not enough to lift East Grand past Ashland. Morgan Doughty had nine points for the Hornets.

Ashland led 8-4, 11-10 and 19-16 at the quarter breaks.

Hodgdon 32, Easton 37 — At Easton Dec. 30, Taylor Desrosiers, Megan Russell and Sydney Howell each had six points but it was not enough to secure the Hawks’ third win of the year.

Delia Bonner tossed in nine points for Easton while Elise Allen added eight points.

Easton led 6-4, 19-16 and 26-24 at the quarter breaks.

East Grand 29, Woodland 42 — At Baileyville Dec. 28, Jennie Cox led the Dragons as she poured in 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Shawna Monk added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Haleigh Shay paced East Grand with 16 points. Mallory Gilman chipped in eight.

Woodland led 12-3, 27-12 and 30-21 at the quarter breaks.

Katahdin 28, Hodgdon 40 — At Hodgdon Dec. 27, Kora Lambert netted 15 points to lead the Hawks to their second straight victory. Sydney Howell added nine points and Taylor Desrosiers chipped in eight for Hodgdon.

Georgia Landry had 14 points for the Cougars.

Katahdin led 8-4 in the first quarter and 17-14 at the half, before the Hawks went up 24-23 after three periods.
