PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Six area youth have advanced to the Northern District Elks Hoop Shoot after their performances in the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 foul shooting competition held Sunday at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Gymnasium.
The next round is set for this Sunday, Jan. 15 at the James F. Doughty School on Fifth Street in Bangor.
William Sewall, chairman of the Presque Isle lodge’s Hoop Shoot, said 50 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13 participated in the recent event at UMPI after having qualified at their local school or recreation department.
Communities represented were Ashland, Caribou, Easton, Limestone, Mapleton, Mars Hill, Presque Isle, Washburn and Woodland.
The winners from this Sunday’s event are, in the age 8 and 9 category, Ainsley Caron of Washburn and Raiden Cochran of Easton; in the age 10 and 11 category, Olivia Locke of Mapleton and Wesley Lapointe of Caribou; and in the age 12 and 13 category, Faith Sjoberg of Presque Isle and Braydon Castonguay of Washburn.
Sjoberg, the daughter of Susan and Kevin Sjoberg, was the high scorer for the competition, making 22 of 25 foul shots. In the 2016 Elks Hoop Shoot contest, then competing in the age 10 and 11 category, she won in the local, district, state and New England competitions in order to advance to the Elks’ national competition held in Chicago, Ill. last April.
