100 Years Ago – Jan. 10, 1917

 Speaker — Hon. Leonard A. Pierce goes to Augusta, today, where he will be one of the after-dinner speakers at a banquet of the Maine Bar Association. Ex-President William H. Taft will be one of the speakers.

 Good service — The Aroostook public have expressed themselves as very grateful to the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for the manner in which they cared for the shopping public Christmas week.Trains from Bangor were invariably several hours off their schedule. In order to accommodate the shopping public a special train was sent out several times during the week.

 

75 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1942

 Enlisted— Two Houlton young men enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps last week, according to Staff Sergeant Robert P. Gibson, Jr., in charge of the Marine Recruiting Office in the Presque Isle Municipal Building. The Houlton lads accepted are Delmont Eugene Cummings and Clinton Harry Brown, Jr. They Monday morning for Parris Island, South Carolina, where they will train for six or eight weeks.

 New Year baby — Only one New Year’s baby was born Thursday morning at the Aroostook General Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Saunders (Joyce Lambert). The first 1942 addition to Houlton’s population has been named Terry Leigh Saunders.

 

50 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1967

 Anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Louis Robichaud observed their 55th wedding anniversary Sunday with a family gathering at their home. They were married in St. Agatha on January 8, 1912. They have eight children, 34 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

 Receives award — Major Herbert H. Holmes, son of Mrs. Eva E. Holmes of Patten, has received the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. Major Holmes was awarded the medal for meritorious service as a KC-135 StratoTanker aircrew commander at Bergstrom AFB, Texas. He was cited for his outstanding airmanship, initiative and devotion to duty.

 

25 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1992

 Help out shelter — Mrs. Faulkingham’s third-grade class at Wellington School selected the Houlton animal shelter as its Christmas charity. The students put together a box of 50 dog biscuits from scratch, a variety of pets’ food, toys and blankets. Accepting the gifts on behalf of the animals shelter were Laura Carmichael and Johnica Aldrich.

 Winner—  Katie McGary, 7, of Houlton, brought home a giant stocking after winning a Dec. 24 draw at Elm Tree Diner. McGary is the daughter of Wayne and Sharon McGary.
