102 Years Ago – January 14, 1915
Basketball game — The Gouldville grammar School basketball team defeated the Training School second team in Perry Theatre by a score of 19 to 11.
In the first half, Gouldville outclassed their opponents but in the second half after the T.S. lineup had been strengthened, the score was slightly in the favor of the Training School. 75 Years Ago – January 8, 1942
Rotary luncheon — Staff Sergeant Robert P. Gibson of the local Marine recruiting office was the principal speaker at the Rotary luncheon. He described Marine requirements and duties in an interesting fashion. Guests were Harry Umphrey, Donald Umphrey, Wallace Woodman, Cligord McIntyre, Washburn; J.C. Vlainult. Park commission boost development at Quoggy Joe — Attending the two-day January meeting of the Maine Park Commission were Ray Randell of Augusta; George Thomas of Camden; Charles Bradford of Augusta; Harry B. Green of Presque Isle; and J.W. Tapley, president of the Merchants’ Association. The Commission made plans to push ahead the winter sports development at the Quoggy Joe site. The ski trail being placed in the A-1 shape as quickly as possible and the ski tow to be in operation.
50 Years Ago – January 12, 1967
Audubon wildlife movies — The third in a series of Audubon wildlife movies, entitled “Wildlife of the Eastern Woodland,” a color film, was shown at Wieden Hall at Aroostook State College. Mr. Earl L. Hilfiker presented the film. Girl Scout Troop 339 and the Presque Isle Garden Club sponsored these audubon films. They were presented in person by naturalists and wildlife photographers with the purpose of furthering knowledge and understanding of natural history and to promote conservation. The proceeds used to promote the Troop’s activities.
Housing aid — The Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act, signed the previous month by President Johnson, made it possible for a broader range of families to qualify for housing credit under expanded housing loan authorities of the Farmers Home Administration said Nate Churchill, FHA county Supervisor in the Presque Isle office.
25 Years Ago – January 8, 1992
New in ’92 — Central Aroostook’s New Year’s baby, Brittni Rae Tackett-Wiggins, made everyone wait until the second day of 1992 to make her grand appearance. The 8 pound, 2 ounce newborn, daughter of Janice Wiggins and Raymond Tackett, both of Mars Hill, was delivered at TAMC at 12:55 p.m. As the year’s first citizen, Brittni qualified for a special assortment of gifts from area businesses.
’Cat skaters earn first victory — Seniors Scott Walton and Jamie Derosier along with freshman Nate Straetz grabbed the bull by the horns, scoring five goals, as the Presque Isle Wildcats picked up their first-ever hockey win, 5-4, over the Foxcroft Academy Ponies at Old Town’s Sockalexis Memorial Arena. The ’Cats, 1-7 in their first season, are seeded eight of out 10 teams in Eastern Maine Class B Heal Point Standings.
Rotarians raise $5,000 — A crowd of over 200 people attended the Ashland Rotary Club Auction. A total of over $5,000 was raised with one half of the proceeds donated to the Aroostook Valley Health Center’s building expansion fund.The other half went to other Rotary projects: tennis court resurfacing, scholarships for local students, Lifeline subscriptions, a Paul Harris Fellowship and a number of other smaller local projects.
