SmartAsset, a financial technology company, recently released their second annual study on the counties across America with the lowest per capita debt, and Aroostook County is one of the best in Maine.
The study analyzed counties by the amount of debt residents held across three categories: credit cards, auto, and mortgage, compared to local income.
Though Aroostook had the third lowest average income of Maine counties at $21,933, it ranked lowest in mortgage debt at 44 percent of income; other counties ranged from 62.5 percent to 94.4 percent.
Other debt factors measured included credit card debt, which placed Aroostook at 9.4 percent of income, tied with Lincoln and Knox for fifth highest, and auto debt, at 18.1 percent of income, the second highest.
