CARIBOU, Maine — With legal, recreational marijuana on the horizon, Caribou’s City Council and Planning Board will be holding a workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers to discuss what recreational pot will mean for Caribou.

Council will then hold another public hearing on recreational marijuana during their Jan. 23 meeting at 6 p.m..

Council also passed an additional ordinance during their Jan. 9 meeting, which further clarifies specific categories of recreational marijuana establishments. According to the ordinance included with the council packet, this includes “Retail Marijuana,” “Retail marijuana cultivation facilities,” “Retail marijuana establishments,” “Retail marijuana products,” “Retail marijuana products manufacturing facilities,” “Retail marijuana social clubs,” and “Retail marijuana stores.”

Deputy Mayor David Martin asked Council if it would be wise to wait and see what the Maine legislature decides regarding recreational marijuana.

“The workshop is to learn more about the topic so we’re not behind the eight ball when the law actually goes into effect,” said City Manager Austin Bleess. “It’s not to craft a final version of the ordinance, but just to start the process of learning more information.”

Council then decided on meeting dates before approving the warrant during their Monday night session.
