Lucky dog wins $50 toward next vet visit

CARIBOU, Maine — As part of Caribou tradition, one lucky dog was selected at random to win a $50 certificate to the vet and will become the face of next year’s drawing.     City Clerk Jayne Farrin handed Mayor Gary Aiken a tub containing the names of roughly 512 licensed dogs, and Ron and Brenda Cote’s canine “Teddy” was selected.

According to Farrin, Teddy’s lovable face will be on next year’s dog licensing poster and he will recieve a $50 discount on his next trip to the vet.

“There’s excitement to licensing your dog,” Farrin said during the Jan. 9 City Council meeting. “I want to remind everyone that there is no late fee until Feb. 1, at which point a $6 dog will cost $31 and an $11 dog will cost $36.”

Of the several hundred dogs entered in the drawing, all were registered between Oct. 15 and Dec. 31 of last year.

Councilor Phil McDonough asked Farrin what determines the cost of licensing dogs, and she explained that the lower charge is for spayed or neutered canines while the higher fee is levied on dogs that can still reproduce.

City Manager Austin Bleess added that these fees are all set on a state government level.

Late fees, according to the city clerk, go toward the city of Caribou.
