PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin cooperative hockey team has enjoyed a resurgence on the ice this season.

Under the guidance of coach Tony Marino, the Black Hawks are now 6-3 on the year, which sees the team ranked fifth in the Class B North division and in the mix to qualify for the postseason. The top seven squads make the playoffs, with the quarterfinals beginning Feb. 28.

Against Presque Isle Monday, the Black Hawks once again soared to victory over the Wildcats with a 3-1 win. Just 1:40 into the game, Alex Wilde netted his first career varsity goal for the Black Hawks off assists from Gavin Vining and AJ Henderson.

The team’s second goal came at 10:49 into the first period as Josh Malone scored off assists from Brandon Dunn and Drew Marino to give the team a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, Dunn scored a breakaway power play goal at the 11:32 mark off a pass from Malone to go up 3-0.

Later in the same period, Presque Isle scored on a power play goal of its own to cut the lead to 3-1. Neither team was able to crease the goal line in the third period.

The Black Hawks also played John Bapst Saturday, winning 5-4 and lost to Brewer 7-1 Thursday. Results from those games were not reported.

Coach Marino also noted that in the Jan. 2 Messalonskee game, which was reported in last week’s edition, Noah Reynolds should have been credited with scoring his first career goal.
