CARIBOU, Maine — Stepping outside today without warm clothing could lead to frostbite, or even hypothermia, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.
In an advisory issued at 4:25 a.m., the National Weather Service’s warns of the possibility of dangerous wind chills with readings of 20 to 30 degrees below zero. These winds, according to NWS, may “quickly produce frostbite on exposed skin,” and potentially “lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.”
This warning was not only issued for Caribou, but for Fort Kent in northern Aroostook and Houlton in the southern part of The County as well.
Lasting from 10 p.m. tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow, the warning includes a prediction of temperatures between five and 10 degrees below zero.
“If you must venture outdoors,” the warning reads, “make sure you wear a hat and gloves.”
Sub zero temperatures aren’t the only hazard in store on this traditionally unlucky day, as the Weather Service issued another warning at 7:08 a.m. this morning regarding patchy black ice on the roads.
“The falling temperatures and remaining moisture on roads have created patchy black ice and slippery road conditions in some locations,” the second advisory read. “Motorists travelling this morning should be alert for icy patches on area roads.”
