102 Years Ago – Jan. 21, 1915

School inspection — Col. C.P. Allen, a member of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal Schools, who accompanied Supt. Payson Smith and the members of the Educational Committee to the upper part of the County on a trip of school inspection, said they found the Fort Kent Training School at high water mark of efficiency and prosperity. They had 175 pupils, the largest number in the history of the school.

New law office — Ralph K. Wood announced the opening of an office for the general practice of law in the rooms of the A.M. Smith Block formerly occupied by his brother, W.S. Wood.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 15, 1942

Title — Bob Tate led the bowlers in the Mooseleuk Club tournament with a hefty average of 105.6. Ralph Hardy was second with 103.4. The 10 leading bowlers were: Tate; Hardy; Street, 102.6; Verne Beverly, 99.8; Henry Gagnon, 98.8; Ed Smith, 98.6; Newall Smith, 98.6; Fred Drew, 98.4; Leroy Brown, 96.8; and Mesereau, 96.6.

Alline re-elected — Larry Alline was re-elected president of the Presque Isle Hotel Company at the annual meeting. Directors named were A.J. Libby, W.R. Christie, F.B. Thompson, N.F. Perry, P.R. Winslow, L.H. Alline, and F.C. Wheeler.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 19, 1967

Increase drive for beet acreage — The University of Maine Extension Service had arranged to have several outstanding farmers join the staff to stimulate interest in contracting for 1967 sugar beet acreage. They included Merle Johnston of Fort Fairfield, Raymond Lamoreau and John Cameron of Presque Isle, Wilfred Donovan of Houlton, and Arthur Holdsworth and Amos Fletcher of Caribou. Discussing the program were Stanley P. Greaves, manager of the Maine Sugar Beet Growers Association, Johnston, Cameron and Lamoreau, Lewis P. Roberts, Extension sugarbeet specialist, and Donovan.

Troop chartered — Boy Scout Troop 188 of the Ray Goding American Legion Post was awarded its troop charter from the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, after its formation and organization the previou fall. The charter, which was given to the sponsoring organization for display, was presented to American Legion Commander Keith Higgins at the last Legion meeting by parent committeeman John F. Boyle assisted by Institutional Representative Jon Sluka.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 15, 1992

Artist donated painting — Rickie Harvath, hair stylist from Blaine, recently donated one of his oil painting to the library at the University of Maine Presque Isle. According to Harvath, “This donation was a tribute to all the wonderful employees who worked at the library. They had gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping me use the library facilities to acquire information.” Leah Nelson, administrative assistant, and Anna McGrath, interim library director, accepted the painting.

Pine Street Authors — Four Pine Street Elementary School student writers were selected to represent the school at the annual Young Authors Institute. There were Michael Cronin and Heather Tompkins, grade 4, and Amy Gagnon and Reid Walsh, grade 5.

1,000-Point scorer — Easton High School senior Craig Smith was presented with the game ball by EHS Principal Jack Seymour following Smith’s 1,000th career high school basketball point at Wisdom High School in St. Agatha. Smith had 27 points and 20 rebounds in a 54-44 win for the Bears.
