ACAP offers tobacco prevention assistance

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — MaineHealth has chosen Aroostook County Action Program to provide tobacco prevention services to Aroostook County residents. The Fund for a Healthy Maine distributed funds to local Healthy Maine Partnerships throughout Maine, including ACAP, who has provided tobacco services since 2001.

Community Education Specialists Dawn Roberts and Jo-Ellen Kelley will provide the Tobacco Use and Exposure Prevention work in Aroostook County, focusing on tobacco prevention, secondhand smoke exposure and tobacco treatment available through the Maine Tobacco Helpline.

Roberts and Kelley, who have 32 combined years of experience with tobacco services, will serve as a resource to community organizations, schools, municipalities, housing units, worksites, hospitals, veterinarian offices, lodging facilities and behavioral health settings. Their help may include creating and maintaining tobacco-free policies, assistance in implementing ordinances, utilizing the Maine Tobacco Helpline and reducing the exposure to secondhand smoke by increasing the number of tobacco-free policies.

“We are happy to be able to continue this important work in Aroostook County,” said Roberts.

“Our goal is to not only create new policy but to enhance the current policies that are in place due in part to the good work that has already been done in our region,” said Kelley. “I’m confident that this new work plan will not only strengthen existing policies but lead us down a path to creating new ones as well.”
