McGills Community Band gearing up for another season

HOULTON, Maine — Do you know how to play a musical instrument? If so, McGill’s Community Band wants you to join.

For 32 years, McGills Community Band has entertained audiences throughout the summer with its cool sounds of big band favorites, contemporary pieces and timeless classics with concerts in Houlton’s Monument Park. Kevin Mania returns as the band’s conductor for his fourth season.

Rehearsals for this year’s band will be on Monday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m. starting on Monday, March 13.

The first concert is slated for 7 p.m., Friday, March 31 at the Houlton Community Arts Center at Houlton High School, which is much earlier than past years. McGill’s Band will be the opening act for the University of Maine Symphonic Band, who is touring with free concerts.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to see more great live music,” Mania said. “Last year, we had a great new banner made by Pam McGary, dedicated a lifetime achievement plaque to Mike Clark, and introduced a handful of great new players to the group.”

The Concerts in the Park series will start on Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m.

McGill’s Community Band of Houlton was organized in 1985 as the fulfillment of David McGillicuddy’s dream. McGillicuddy, band instructor for SAD 29, dreamt of resurrecting a local community band concept with membership comprised of local musicians who would perform in Monument Park on nice summer evenings as had been done in days past by the Houlton Town Band.

The first band was formed that year with 55 members. Membership in the band, at one point topped 100 players. Members now are a variety of younger and older players.

“If you have ever played a band instrument and wanted to be a part of this great group, contact us,” Mania said. He can be reached at 207-538-3860 or kevin.mania@rsu29.org.
