Young musicians rock out in HHS

HOULTON, Maine — The stage of Houlton’s Community Arts Center was electric Wednesday evening as Houlton Middle-High School held its annual “Battle of the Bands” event as part of the school’s “Spirit Week.”

Each class was required to form a musical group or identify a soloist to compete in the event, with points awarded for first through fourth place. The points are added to each class’ total for “Spirit Week.” The senior class took home top honors for the evening

Representing the freshman class were Ethan Rollins and Joseph Spencer, who took turns playing electric guitars.

For the sophomore class, Jacob Tapley, Tessa Solomon and Kate Smith each performed solo songs. Tapley played a medley of songs on electric guitar; Smith did a rap tune to the periodic table of elements; and Solomon sang “Runaway Baby”, by Bruno Mars.

Claire Gilpatrick was the lone representative for the junior class and she performed the song “Breakeven”, by The Script; and “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”.

The senior class band, composed of John Thatcher, Chloe Davis, Taylor Reed, Dylan Johnston, Victoria Holmes and Toni MacDonald, performed two songs — a mashup of “Don’t Stop Believing”, by Journey and “Someone Like You”, by Adele, as well as “American Pie” by Don McLean featuring some altered lyrics with a Houlton flair.

Judges for the evening were Heather Mitchell, Molly Dunn and Margaret Hill.

Prior to the band performances a student debate was held featuring Nolan Jacobs and Isaac Vega for the freshman class; Jillian Haggerty for sophomores; Carolyn Hannigan and Jeremy Cook for juniors; and Marsilla Gray and Nadja Messerschmidt for the Class of 2017.
