BREWER, Maine — It was a season to remember for the Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin hockey squad as the Black Hawks enjoyed great success on the ice.
The team’s 9-8-1 regular season record earned the Black Hawks a playoff appearance for the first time in six years. The Black Hawks last playoff appearance came in 2011 when the team was the No. 2 seed and advanced to the regional final before falling to Brewer.
As the No. 5 seed, the Black Hawks faced a familiar foe Tuesday evening in Class B North playoffs as the team faced off against No. 4 Hampden Academy at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer.
Twice during the regular season, overtime was needed to decide a victor, with the Broncos winning both contests 5-4. On Tuesday, the Black Hawks were shut out 3-0.
Joey McLain, Cooper Leland and Marc Thibodeau each scored a goal for the Broncos (14-5). Leland and Sam Economy each added an assist, while Cole Benner finished with 17 saves.
Ian Neurether finished with 34 saves for the Black Hawks, who end their season with a 9-9-1 overall record.
