100 Years Ago – March 14, 1917
Speaking Contest — There was a large audience at the High School Auditorium for the annual Sophomore Speaking Contest. There were eight speakers and each and every one of them deserve special praise. The judges were: F.A. Peabody, Mrs. Thornton and Mr. James, had no easy task in settling at on the winners. First prize went to Miss Helen Tingley, second prize went to Miss Elizabeth Rafford and third prize went to Donald Alexander.
Convention — W. W. McDonald left here Monday for Bangor to attend the National Horse Shoers’ Convention.
75 Years Ago – March 12, 1942
Club opened — A suite of 13 rooms of varying sizes and a wide hallway comprise the home of the Houlton NCCS-operated USO Club at 74 Main Street, on the third floor of the Fogg Block, former location of the Odd Fellows lodge rooms. Entirely renovated and redecorated, and completely furnished with brand new furniture and equipment, the local United Service Organizations’ Club is described as one of the finest in the East by those who have visited many of them.
Painters — Three generations of painters contributed to the remodeling of the Houlton USO Club rooms. Fred M. Russell, 77, is father of Lawrence A. Russell, who is the father of Robert Russell.
50 Years Ago – March 15 , 1967
Winners — The blue ribbon winners in the annual demonstration tournament conducted Saturday at the Houlton Grange Hall by area 4-H clubs were Marguerite O’Donnell, Lorraine Prosser, Julie McCue, James Kervin and Nancy Adair.
Special week — Students of the foreign language classes at Houlton High School have set up exhibits in the observance of Foreign Language Week. Students; Helen Lyons, Carol Gervais, Larry Veysey and Bob Glidden, set up a corridor display and a miniature Eiffel Tower in the school library.
25 Years Ago – March 11, 1992
Birthday — Lyman Wood of Houlton celebrated his 99th birthday on Feb. 19. He is Houlton Senior Citizen’s oldest member and is considered to possess the best bass voice and keenest memory in the club. The birthday cake was presented by Dottie Estabrook, club president. Josephine Bickford, Lala Adams and Betty Lincoln were there to help celebrate.
25th anniversary — The Houlton Lions Club is celebrating its 25th charter anniversary this year. Plans have been made to celebrate the event at the American Legion Hall on Bangor Road in May. Tim and Travis Humphrey will be the entertainment for dancing and listening. Immediate Past District Governor Harold Pollock will be the guest speaker.
