Big East announces basketball season standouts

The Big East Conference recently announced its basketball all-conference teams, players and coaches of the year, sportsmanship winners and special team award winners. Players and coaches from Caribou, Houlton and Presque Isle all received recognition.

Emily Wheaton of Presque Isle and Kolleen Bouchard of Houlton were both named to the girls’ all-conference first team along with Grace Bickford of Foxcroft Academy, Sydney Allen of Central and Crystal Bell of John Bapst. Bouchard was also named girls’ Player of the Year.

On the second team are Emily Lagerstrom of Presque Isle, Rylee Warman of Houlton, Emily Higgins and Lauren Plissey, both of Hermon; and Grace Phillipon of John Bapst. On the third team are Caitlyn Lyons of Washington Academy, Aspen Flewelling of Houlton, Abi Simpson of Foxcroft, Sammy Mason of Ellsworth and Libby Cook of Central.

Gabrielle Marquis of Caribou, Maddy Candage of MDI, Kassidy Dill of Orono, Skylar Vogel of Presque Isle and Makenzy Beaudry of Foxcroft all earned honorable mention.

Shawn Graham of Houlton was named Coach of the Year and MDI captured the team sportsmanship banner.

For the boys, first teamers were Nate Desisto of Orono, Caleb Shaw of Central, Keenan Marseille of Hermon, Bryce Harmon of Ellsworth and Riley Swanson of MDI.

Bradley Kinney and Griffin Guerrette of Presque Isle and Cameron Graham of Houlton were named to the second team along with Isaac Varney of Hermon and Kyle Case of Washington Academy. Making up the third team are Alex Mooney of John Bapst, Russell Kropff and Andrew Phelps, both of MDI; Ryan Hoogterp of Old Town and Keenan Collett of Orono.

Honorable mention went to Yontz Sutton of Washington Academy, Zach Harris of Ellsworth, Jake Koffman of Orono, Carter Ward of Mattanawcook Academy and Andrew Speed of Central.

Desisto was the choice as Player of the Year, Riley Donovan of Central was voted Coach of the Year and John Bapst won the team sportsmanship banner.

Special award winners from the three Aroostook County schools were, for girls, scholar-athlete: Katie Clark of Caribou, Lagerstrom of PI and Warman of Houlton; Paul Soucy Spirit Award: Rachel Soucy of Caribou, Savannah Rodriguez of PI and Kristen Brewer of Houlton; defensive award: Maddie Doucette of Caribou, Vogel of PI and Kristen Graham of Houlton.

For boys: scholar-athlete: Austin Findlen of Caribou, Trace Cyr of PI and Nolan Porter of Houlton; Paul Soucy Spirit Award: Noah Rosado of Caribou, Marcus Ouellette of PI and Dylan Johnston of Houlton; and defensive award: Alex Bouchard of Caribou, Jonah Hudson of PI and Jacob Worthley of Houlton.

Athletes were honored at the Big East Senior All-Star Games, played Saturday at Hermon High School. The awards were presented between the two games.

Competing in the girls’ senior game were Makayla Watson and Warman, both of Houlton; Doucette of Caribou and Vogel and Lagerstrom, both of Presque Isle.

PI’s Kinney and Houlton’s Cameron Graham played in the boys’ game.
