CARIBOU, Maine — After a brief period of calm weather, last night’s nor’easter delivered over a foot of snow to many areas of Aroostook County.
According to the March 15 information from the National Weather Service in Caribou, Allagash reported 13 inches as of 9:11 a.m., Limestone reported 13 inches as of 9:12 a.m., Fort Fairfield reported 15 inches at 9:12 a.m., and Eagle Lake reported 14 inches at 9:15 a.m. Blowing and drifting snow made the depths much greater and somewhat less in places.
Tony Mignone of the Caribou NWS said the latest total for Caribou was 12.8 inches reported near the weather office. Mignone says they have yet to receive totals from Houlton, adding that South Amity (located roughly 20 miles south of Houlton) reported roughly nine and a half inches.
Last night’s wind reports show speeds of 59 miles per hour for Caribou, 54 mph for Frenchville, 46 for Houlton, 40 for New Sweden, 39 for Presque Isle, and 38 mph for Fort Kent.
Local meteorologist Maureen Hastings said at 9:50 a.m. that reports for other areas of Aroostook County will be available via weather.gov/car throughout the day.
Hastings said she is not aware of any damage or power outages in Aroostook as a result of the storm.
“I’m sure they had a tough time keeping up with the drifts overnight,” Hastings said, “but I’m not aware of any issues in Aroostook.”
