The post-season basketball awards keep rolling in for Presque Isle native Chandler Guerrette and teammate Mackenzie Worcester of Washburn.
Guerrette, a Husson University senior, was recently selected as Eastern College Athletic Conference Div. III New England Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, as well as being named to the D3hoop.com All-Northeast Region Third Team and the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) All-Region Second Team.
Guerrette was earlier named North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and NAC Defensive Player of the Year, while also earning her fourth career All-NAC and All-NAC Tournament selections. She was also selected to the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) All-State First Team.
This season, Guerrette led the team in free throws made (97) and attempts (121), assists (102), steals (98), assists per game (3.6), steals per game (3.5) and ranked second in points (403), points per game (14.4), 3-point field goals made (44) and attempts (140), field goals made (131) and attempts (331), defensive rebounds (86), and defensive rebounds per game (3.1).
The guard finished the season ranked in the top-10 in 11 different conference statistical categories, including leading the league in steals and steals per game.
Chandler Guerrette
In 105 career games played, Guerrette tallied 1,333 points, 294 assists, 410 rebounds, 255 steals, and 18 blocks, while shooting 39.1 percent (435-1112) from the floor, 32.0 percent (134-421) from behind the arc and 76.0 percent (329-435) from the free throw line. She averaged 12.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game in her career.
She completed her career ranked among the program’s career leaders in points (third), scoring average (11th), field goals made (10th), field goals attempted (sixth), 3-point field goals made (sixth), 3-point field goals attempted (third), 3-point FG percentage (17th), free throws made (fourth), free throws attempted (fifth), free throw percentage (14th), rebounds (23rd), assists (ninth), steals (fifth), steals average (tied for 6th) and games played (tied for 18th).
Guerrette earned All-NAC Sportsmanship honors in 2016 and was chosen as the MWBCA and NAC Rookie of the Years in 2014, while being selected to the MWBCA All-Rookie Team as well.
Off the court, Guerrette earned All-NAC Academic team honors in 2016.
The 2013 graduate of Presque Isle High School was a two-time state champion for the Wildcats under coach Jeff Hudson and was selected to the Bangor Daily News All-State Team.
Husson teammate Mackenzie Worcester, a sophomore from Washburn, earned ECAC DIII New England honorable mention.
Worcester became the first Eagle player to score 400 points in a season since the 2010-11 season after reaching the milestone in the NAC championship game Feb. 25. She finished with the 10th most points scored in a single-season in program history with 430.
Worcester, who garnered All-NAC second team honors as freshman, earned All-NAC first team and MWBCA All-State second team honors this season after helping the Eagles capture their first back-to-back NAC regular season titles since the 2010 and 2011 seasons. She was tabbed as the NAC championship tournament MVP for the second straight season, the second player in program history to achieve this feat.
Mackenzie Worcester
This season, she led the team in points, points per game (15.4), field goal percentage (.461), field goals made (154) and assists per game (3.6), and for the first time in field goals attempts (334), minutes played (940), and minutes played per game (33.6).
Worcester finished the season ranked second on the team in assists (101), free throw made (81) and attempts (97), free throw percentage (.835), 3-point field goal percentage (.369) and steals per game (2.1), while having the third most 3-point field goals made (41) and attempts (111), total rebounds (132), rebounds per game (4.7), offensive rebounds (47), offensive rebounds per game (1.7), defensive rebounds (85), defensive rebounds per game (3.0), steals (58), blocks (11) and blocks per game (0.4).
In 56 career games played so far, she has tallied 816 points, 242 rebounds, 173 assists, 125 steals and 22 blocks, while shooting 46.5 percent from the floor, 85.6 percent from the charity stripe and 39.8 percent from behind the arc. Worcester has averaged 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.2 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game through her first two years on the Husson campus.
The guard currently sits among the top-ten career leaders in free throw percentage (first), 3-point field goal percentage (second), scoring average (seventh), steals per game (eighth), field goal percentage (10th), and assists per game (10th).
The 2015 graduate of Washburn District High School was part of four state championship teams under coaches Mike Carlos and Diana Trams and was selected to the Bangor Daily News All-State Team.
The formidable duo of Guerrette and Worcester became the first pair of teammates to record over 400 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals in a single season in program history, while helping Husson tie the NCAA era school record for wins in a single-season with 23 en-route to the program’s first ever NCAA tournament victory over DeSales University on March 3, resulting into the program’s first national tournament win in 25 years.
