102 Years Ago – March 25, 1915

Easter concert — The Calumet Club, a newly organized organization, gave an Easter concert and ball in Perry’s Theatre. There was music by a six-piece orchestra.

New potato house — W.H. Winslow planned to build a potato house at the Brannen Siding. More storage room is badly needed there and improvements on the crossroad to make it more passable to haul crops. Nearly 3,000 barrels of potatoes were hauled over that road the previous fall, in spite of its bad condition and with only one potato house there. A good road there would more than double that amount in a very short time with increased storage facilities.

75 Years Ago – March 19, 1942

New supervisors — Roy Libby, of Caribou, George Brown of Presque Isle, and Charles McIntire of Perham, were elected supervisors for the Central Aroostook Soil Conservation District, three-year terms, in elections held throughout central Aroostook. The Soil Conservation District being newly organized so that farmers interested in Soil Erosion practice will have the opportunity of working out plans.

Star-Herald ad brought dog home — Walter Benson of Presque Isle noticed in the Star-Herald that “Cappy,” a collie dog owned by Donald L. Lewis of Presque Isle, was among the missing. Having seen a dog of this description near the airport, Benson called Lewis and stated the facts. The dog “Cappy” wagged his appreciation when found by his master.

50 Years Ago – March 23, 1967

Rotarians give Hospital Check — The Presque Isle Rotary fulfilled its first installment on a $36,000 pledge to the A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital expansion fund. The Rotary at a regular meeting presented Ralph Brown, the president of the Board of Trustees at Gould Memorial Hospital, a check for $7,502 and $13,000 in Gold Brick pledges for the expansion fund.

Phillips, Grant awarded — At the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting, Wendell Phillips was awarded the Live Wire Club’s Community Service Plaque in recognition of his work on matters of industrial development for Presque Isle. Ted Grant received an award for his efforts in making the first February Fun Festival a success.

25 Years Ago – March 18, 1992

PI frosh finish at 17-2 — The Presque Isle High School freshman boys basketball team completed their season with a 99-34 win over the Eagles at Limestone. The victory, their third of the weeks, improved the young Wildcats’ record to 17-2. Lucien LaBelle led the way for Presque Isle with 18 points while Brad Sargent scored 16 points. Tom McLellan hit 15 points, Jonathan Miller scored nine and Matt Casavant and Jake Archer had eight points each. The freshmen stopped the Fort Fairfield Tigers 46-38. The Wildcats topped the Hornet junior varsity, 61-34, at Ashland. Al Berube had a game high 12 points while Kevin Clair and Jason Nightingale each scored 11 points.
