Maine authors visit Mars Hill

On Thursday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m., authors Mark Nickerson and John Ford will visit the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library to share poignant and humorous stories from their days in law enforcement.

Nickerson spent 28 years as a Maine State trooper, while Ford spent 20 years as a Maine Warden before being elected Sheriff in Waldo County.

They will have books available for sale following their talk.

On Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m., Linda Trickey from the University of Maine Extension will speak about how to plan and plant your garden.

Evening hours

The library is in the midst of a trial of extended night hours, and will be open from 12:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If this is well received by patrons, it will become the new standard.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, March 14, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Guest speaker Steve Towle of Fort Fairfield spoke about the Nordic Heritage Center and the many activities that take place there.
The facility is a four-season venue with many trails for hiking, mountain biking, trail running and walking. The facility covers around 400 acres and has been the site of international World Cup biathlon activities. The facility will apply to hold the World Cup again in a few years.
In the winter months, the facility sees snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and “fat-tire” biking. They also hold the area middle school cross-country championship each year.

School registration

SAD 42 will be hold registration on Friday, April 14, for the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs for the 2017-2018 school year. Registration will be at the Fort Street School; the classes are open to 4- and 5-year-old children of the Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater area.
Preschool students must be 4 years of age on or before Oct. 15, 2017. Students who will be 5 years of age on or before that date are eligible for Kindergarten. Contact Fort Street School at 429-8514 or 429-8515 to schedule an appointment.
The state of Maine requires: (1) proof of immunizations and (2) birth certificate. Hospital copies are not acceptable. A copy must be obtained from the municipal office of the town or city where the child was born. SAD 42 requires these documents at the time of registration.
If you are not a legal parent, a copy of guardianship papers must be completed before registration.
Students currently enrolled in pre-K do not need to register. Call the school for further details.

Aroostook Health Center

Upcoming events for the week of March 22 – 28 include: Wednesday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Walmart Shopping at 9:00 a.m., Karaoke with Larry and Larry at 1:30 p.m. and United Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. Friday will feature March Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Episcopal Church Service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will be a free day with games, puzzles and movies in the day room. Sunday will have televised church available in the day room and the Mennonite Hymnsing at 6:30 p.m. Monday will feature Nails by Shallie and Melissa at 9:30 a.m. and Game Time at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Card Games at 1:30 p.m.

Bingo

The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill is hosting Bingo on Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available.
