CUMBERLAND FORESIDE Maine – Wayne David Sherwood, 82, died peacefully at his home in Cumberland Foreside, on March 12, 2017, after a prolonged battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Wayne was born on May 7, 1934, the only child of Arthur Sherwood and Kathleen Nadeau. His childhood years were spent on his Grandmother’s farm in Houlton, Maine. Wayne had many fond memories of the farm, his dog, learning to drive a tractor and flying a plane at a very young age.
Wayne graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray, Maine, in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly thereafter. He returned to Maine after being stationed in Germany for over two years. Not finding work, he set out for the Midwest to earn his fortune. There, he worked for a number of years for American Bridge, US Steel on large complex construction projects. Using the GI Bill, he enrolled in Purdue University in 1968, graduating with a degree in Labor Relations in 1972.
When Wayne returned to Maine in the mid-seventies, he married Heather Pendergast. They enjoyed the beauty of country living in Maine until her death in 2002. Wayne is survived by her mother, Marguaritte Graig Pendergast Stevens of Skaneateles, New York, and her children, Craig Pendergast of Kennebunkport, Maine, and Ann Pendergast of Big Horn, Wyoming.
Wayne is also survived by his wife, Rita Carroll Yavinksy, whom he married on 2003; and her three sons, Merrill Yavinsky and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Ryan, Kyla, Callista and Kaeden; Michael Yavinsky and his wife, Margaret, and their children, Colin, Thomas and Megan; and Marc Yavinsky and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Andrew, Erin, Ava and Tucker.
