MARS HILL, Maine — The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, March 21, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. A special guest was Byron Alvarez of Guatemala, who works with various Rotary Clubs from the U.S. and Canada with projects in his country.
The guest speakers were Rod McCrum of Pineland Farms and Richard Hall, executive vice president of Bob Evans Farms. They spoke about the fourth phase of expansion at the Mars Hill facility, which should be up and running by May. This will allow the plant to process 180 million pounds of potatoes. They have around 200 workers at the plant.
Bob Evans Farms is going to be changing to a food processing plant. They are selling off the restaurant division of the company. They currently have over half of the market share in side dishes, and buying Pineland Farms will help them offer even more products.
Authors at library
On Thursday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m., authors Mark Nickerson and John Ford will visit the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library to share poignant and humorous stories from their days in law enforcement.
Nickerson spent 28 years as a Maine State trooper, while Ford spent 20 years as a Maine Warden before being elected Sheriff in Waldo County.
They will have books available for sale following their talk.
On Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m., Linda Trickey from the University of Maine Extension will speak about how to plan and plant your garden.
Evening hours
The library is in the midst of a trial of extended night hours, and will be open from 12:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If this is well received by patrons, it will become the new standard.
School registration
MSAD 42 will conduct registration for the prekindergarten and kindergarten programs for the 2017-2018 school year on Friday, April 14, 2017, at the Fort Street School. This is open to 4- and 5-year-old children of the Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater area.
Pre-school students must be 4 years of age on or before Oct. 15, 2017. Students who will be 5 years of age on or before October 15, 2017 are eligible for Kindergarten. Please contact the Fort Street School at 429-8514 or 429-8515 to schedule an appointment to register your child.
The State of Maine requires proof of immunizations and the child’s birth certificate. Hospital copies are not acceptable. A copy must be obtained from the municipal office of the town or city where the child was born. MSAD 42 requires these documents at the time of registration. For those who are not legal parents, a copy of guardianship papers must be completed before registration.
Those students currently enrolled in the 4-year-old program do not need to register. Call the school for further details.

Thursday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m.
Friday will feature Game Time at 9:30 a.m. and Dayroom Cinema with Popcorn at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday will be a free day with games, puzzles and movies in the day room.
Sunday will have televised church available in the day room and Full Gospel Assembly at 3:00 p.m.
Monday will feature Nails by Shallie and Melissa at 9:30 a.m., Catholic Mass at 1:30 p.m. and Devotions with Velma at 3:15 p.m.
Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Card Games at 1:30 p.m.

Bingo
The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill will host Bingo on Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. at the Post. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening with friends!
