100 Years Ago – March 28, 1917
Attending meeting — Mrs. Cora M. Putnam and Mrs. H.M. Cates were in Millinocket last week attending a meeting of the State Camp of Royal Neighbors. Mrs. Putnam was elected to the office of Vice Oracle at the annual election held. This is a high honor to the Houlton lady who has always taken a keen interest in the work of the local lodge.
Travel — William McMinnemon, Houlton’s expert horseman, left here Friday night for Chicago where he will attend the horse sale.
75 Years Ago – March 26, 1942
Helping out — Boy Scouts ship paper in defense effort. Some of the boys who worked hard all day Saturday in loading a railroad car of waste paper and magazines for national defense with two of their leaders. Bright-faced and eager, the lads lugged heavy bundles of waste totaling almost 20 tons. Money from the sale of the paper will help the troops in sending boys to summer camp.
New job — Mrs. Lester Reece left Friday for Washington, D.C., where she will be employed in the War Department.
50 Years Ago – March 29 , 1967
Service awards — Two veteran employees of the Houlton office of the Telephone Company were honored by fellow employees and company officials at Al’s Parkview on Main Street. Mrs. Helen Ingraham, a 30-year employee, received a money tree from Delmar Shaw of Bangor, district traffic manager, while Mrs. Elizabeth ‘Hammie’ Cameron, a 45-year employee, receives a money tree from James Nelson of Bangor, traffic manager.
Winner — Miss Cynthia Marie McGillicuddy of Hodgdon High School has been chosen 1967 State Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Maine. She will receive a $1,500 scholarship from General Mills.
25 Years Ago – March 25, 1992
Awarded — Students in grades K-6 at Hodgdon Middle School were honored recently at an awards ceremony in the ‘Go for the Gold’ reading contest for Chapter 1 students. Over 60 students participated in the program receiving gold, silver, bronze and participation medals.
Promise kept — Sp.4 Jim Albert of the U.S. Army B Company 101st Aviation Unit kept a promise to Wellington School students as he returned to the Monticello school with MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat). The Wellington students had written to Jim while he was in the Persian Gulf. After a special welcome home party last April, he promised to return with MRE’s used while on maneuvers.
