100 Years Ago – April 4, 1917

    Concert The District Nurse Committee have made extensive preparations for the Easter Monday concert and ball which is to be held for the benefit of the district nurse fund. Tickets are placed at $1.50 which include refreshments. Bryson’s orchestra will furnish the music and that means something good.

   Talk No student of history can afford to miss the unusual opportunity of hearing Ex-President Taft talk on our world relationships.

75 Years Ago – April 2, 1942

    Enlists Miss Marlon Hawkins, a graduate of the Maine General Hospital in Portland in 1941, has enlisted in the U. S. Army Nursing Corps and has received the rank of Second Lieutenant. Miss Hawkins is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hawkins and was graduated from Houlton High School in the class of 1937.

    Accepts position Miss Doris Albert, who has been in Newport, Vt., the past four months with her brother, Frederick Albert who is employed in the M. H. Fishman stores there has accepted a position as stenographer in the War Department in Washington D.C.

50 Years Ago – April 5 , 1967

    Retiring Mr. and Mrs. William Burton of Watson avenue were guests of honor Friday night at the Dux Club in observance of Mr. Burton’s retirement from the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, and also of his birthday. Mr Burton joined the B & A in 1922 and was one of the first traveling conductors the railroad had. He retired after 45 years service.

   Sold Acquisition of the starch operation of the Morningstar Products Division of Morningstar-Paisley, Inc., was announced this week by the A. E. Staley Mfg. Co. Staley President Donald E. Nordlund made the announcement as he and other Staley officials visited the Houlton plant on Monday. The acquisition consists of plants in Houlton and Monticello, and at Monte Vista, Colo.

25 Years Ago – April 1, 1992

   Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Flemming celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary March 27 at a party in the Youth Center of the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Smyrna Mills. Wallace and Eloise were married March 22, 1932 in Woodstock, N. B. by Rev. Hedley Bragdon.

  Budding authors — Littleton Elementary School students; Luke Jones, Katie Nichols and Autumn Gentle were given certificates of recognition at the 1992 Young Authors Institute held at Limestone High School March 14. As well as students from the Wellington Elementary School, Helena Haines, Erica Lynds and Bruce Ellis received certificates of recognition.
