102 Years Ago – April 8, 1915
Chase re-elected — At a joint meeting of the school boards of the Presque Isle-Chapman district, W. O. Chase was unanimously re-elected superintendent, with an increase in salary.
New secretary — E. I. Waddell, who attended the meeting of the State Jewellers’ Association held in Portland, was elected secretary of the Association.
75 Years Ago – April 2, 1942
Michaud hits jackpot — Irene Michaud hit the jackpot at the 20th Century Bowling Alleys, collecting high single for the women and high three string total. Irene knocked the pins in all directions when she hit 153 a new daddies record at the alleys. Her three sting total was 347. Les Kelso came up with high three string total of 360, while Don Caslon collected high string of 136.
New office — Dr. Thomas J. Miller opened an office in Ashland to practice in the community. He took the medical course at Ohio State University and graduated from the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery. He served his surgical internship at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine at Portland. He was affiliated with the Sigma Sigma Phi and Alpha Phi Omega fraternal organizations while at Kirksville College.
50 Years Ago – April 5, 1967
Presque Isle Hi-Y stole show at U.N. — Eight Presque Isle High School students returned from a two-day Model United Nations General Assembly, a biennial program sponsored by the YMCA for members of high school Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs, held at the University of Maine in Orono. There were 150 students representing 49 nations.
Vahlsing Earned 12 cents per share — Vahlsing, Inc., Easton, fresh and frozen potato processor, announced that for the first quarter ended January, 31, 1967, the Company had gross sales (including its 66 per cent owned subsidiary Magic Valley Frozen Foods, Inc.) of $3,152,287 and consolidated net earnings, after provision for Federal Taxes and the minority interest, of $126, 396 or $.12 per share.
25 Years Ago – April 1, 1992
Wieden Star City’s top citizen — Dr. Clifford O. T. Wieden named “1991 Citizen of the Year” by a committee representing the Presque Isle Rotary and Lions clubs and the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce. He was recognized at the Northeastland Hotel for his numerous outstanding achievements, he was President Emeritus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle and for his 50-year history of service to the community.
Freeman announced state Senate bid — J. Gregory Freeman of Presque Isle announced his intentions to seek the District 2 State Senate seat being vacated by State Sen. Donald Collins of Caribou. President of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Presque Isle, a life-long resident of Aroostook County, born in Fort Kent and raised in Presque Isle, he had devoted much of his time to public service on the state, county and local levels over the years.
