102 Years Ago – April 15, 1915
Conference — Rev. G. Edward Allan attended the East Maine Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Churches in Dover and Foxcroft.
Purchase and construction — The Star-Herald learnt from Rep. S.C. Greenlaw that the Governor had affixed his signature to the act appropriating funds for the completion of the purchase of the State Experimental Farm and the construction of buildings.
75 Years Ago – April 9, 1942
Winslow appointed Aircraft Warning Service Head — Percy R. Winslow, of Presque Isle, had been appointed District Civil Director of the Aircraft Warning Service of Maine by Brigadier General T.K. Cannon, commanding officer of the Headquarters First Interceptor Command, New York City.
PI Motor Corp volunteer service — Twenty-five women enrolled in the Presque Isle Motor Corps Volunteer Service. This group completed a motor mechanics course with Simon Martin, instructor. In order to be a qualified member of the Motor Corps, one must be certified by the American Red Cross in both Standard and Advanced First Aid, have a doctor’s certificate and pass a Driver’s Test.
50 Years Ago – April 12, 1967
Gould Given Aide Grant — Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, D-Maine, was advised that a Manpower Development and Training Act grant for $13,702 had been awarded to Gould Memorial Hospital, Presque Isle, where 48 unemployed persons are to be trained for five weeks as nurse aides. The grant was approved jointly by the departments of Labor and Health, Education and Welfare.
New Internist — Dr. Daniel Curtin, an internist who moved to Presque Isle from Ireland, opened his office on Main Street. He received his medical education at the University College, Dublin. He completed his internship in Dublin and served the following residencies: internal medicine in Dublin and Manchester, infectious diseases in Liverpool, and chest diseases in Dublin.
25 Years Ago – April 8, 1992
Service recognized — Chairman of the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) board of directors, Tim Crowley, presented outgoing board member from Houlton, Dr. Lloyd Chase, a plaque recognizing his 18 years of dedicated service to ACAP. Under his leadership, the agency experienced a 28 percent growth in revenues and implemented several important services including a training program for displaced farmers; the first Aroostook Teen Conference; a daycare center on the UMPI campus; a dental sealant program for first-grade children; and a pilot economic development service called the Maine Job Start Program.
Smith retired from state police — Lt. Bradford S. Smith retired from the Maine State Police after 24 years of service. For the past five years, Smith had been the commanding officer of Troop B in Gray, overseeing three sergeants and 28 troopers who patrol in Cumberland, Oxford and Androscoggin counties. He had devoted nearly a quarter century of dedicated service to the people of Maine.
