HOULTON, Maine —Two Matter of Balance groups completed their Spring Semester. The Monday and Wednesday groups were combined for the last day. Joe Fagnant presented each participant with a certificate of completion.
Qiu Peng, doctor of pharmacy, was a great speaker. She works at Rite Aid and came to the group on her day off to answer questions on a request for information about vitamins. She spoke on vitamins for seniors and vitamins, minerals, and supplements for older adults. There are common drug nutrient depletions even with a healthy diet. Depletions and interactions are one thing that can affect balance. Communication with a doctor and pharmacist is important. Individual questions were answered and the class enjoyed Peng’s visit.
Peter J. Madore from County Physical Therapy was also a guest speaker. He took time from his busy schedule to accommodate our request for someone from the medical profession and answer questions. He gave alarming statistics on the number of deaths that occur after a broken hip or fall-related injury.
Madore suggested some exercises to help prevent falls. There is no right way to fall. Prevention is the best plan. He demonstrated how to get up, if you do fall, and also recommended using Life Line if you know you are injured.
Eyes, ears and nerve endings are important to one’s balance. Being diligent with an exercise plan is so important. Walking at the recreation center is an option. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. until April 28. Socialization is important, too, in being consistent.
Madore answered individual questions and the class enjoyed his visit.
Joe Fagnant talked to the groups about ACES — Adult and Community Education for Seniors. These classes being offered for seniors are really getting our attention and interest. “Learning today for a better tomorrow” works for all ages!
Spring semester classes are held through and around unpredictable weather. A fall semester class is being planned for September to November. The eight weeks — one day a week for two hours — goes by quickly.
