HOULTON, Maine — The third annual Hannah 5K run/walk returns to the Shiretown on Saturday, April 29.
Held in memory of Hannah Mooers, a 19-year-old woman from Houlton who died from complications from a congenital heart condition, the walk begins at Millar Civic Center and travels throughout the town before finishing back at the center.
“We usually have between 80-100 walkers” explained Tammy Farwell, event organizer. “We do this in honor of Hannah Mooers because we want to honor the ultimate gift that she gave to others.”
Farwell said the walk’s purpose is to raise awareness on the importance of organ donations.
“I feel the gift of life and the generosity of these people and families is amazing,” she said. “To know that they are willing to something so generous during their time of sorrow is amazing. To be part of something so life altering is humbling.”
Registrations begins at 9 a.m. with the race following at 10 a.m. The participation fee is $10 and includes a T-shirt. Those who wish to wear a pink shirt in Mooers’ memory will only have to pay $5. Funds raised will go toward organ and tissue donation research.
The sponsors are Donate Life America and Houlton Regional Hospital. For more information or to register, call Tammy Farwell at 207-694-0521.
