HOULTON, Maine — The stage of the Houlton Community Arts Center was transformed Saturday and Sunday into a lush green tropical forest as young actors performed the tale of “The Jungle Book”.
Directed by Erin Kafferlin, with assistance by Kate Michaud, the production told the story of “Mowgli,” a young boy raised by jungle creatures. Played by Carissa Michaud, Mowgli’s journey puts him in contact with a wide variety of jungle creatures, including monkeys, peacocks, bears, panthers and tigers.

Cast members included Grace Kafferlin (Nyra), Lydia Byron (Chitra), Sam Kafferlin (Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Nora Kenney (Baloo), Olivia Wedderman (Bagheera), Demetry Given (Father Wolf), Bailey Drake (Mother Wolf), Kaitlyn Kenney (Tabaqui), Lily Bergeron (Kaa), Tia Burlock (Mang), Sophie Lorom (Mor), Allie Collins (Queen Monkey), Phoebe Foss (Shere Khan), Callie Sylvia (Messua), Kayla Bagley (Toomai), Payton Collins (Cobra).
Members of the wolf pack were Elijah Fournier, Chris Bouvier and Rogan McGary, while the cast of monkeys included Ava Wells, Summer Violette and Payton Collins.
As with all Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre productions, students contribute in technical roles and with the creation of sets and props. Olivia Cyr served as the curtain and spotlight operator, while Launa Jay operated the lights and Abby Fitzpatrick did the sound.
The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre, founded in 1969 by students at Ricker College, is one of the oldest community children’s theatres in the country and offers live theater for and by children to the Greater Houlton area. The Theatre is a non-profit organization supported by generous volunteer help and community donations.
