Caribou VFW honors student essayists

CARIBOU, Maine — The Lister-Knowlton VFW Post 9389 of Caribou recently held its annual Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Awards Dinner to honor the families and the local winners of this year’s competitions.

The Voice of Democracy is a national VFW scholarship program in which high school student can compete in an audio essay contest for a chance to earn recognition at the post, district and state levels as well as the possibility of competing for the grand prize of a $30,000 scholarship.

The Patriots Pen competition is an essay contest open to middle school students in which young writers have the opportunity to compete for recognition at all levels.

According to VFW Commander Roger Felix, this year’s winners at the post level for the Voice of Democracy were Caribou High School students Brennan Poitas, first place; Alexis Bruso, second place; and Nickolas Guerrette, third place.

Caribou Middle School’s Chloe Sleeper, a seventh-grader, and eighth-grader Krysta McLaughlin of Woodland Consolidated School are the winners of the Patriots Pen competition at the post level.
