PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A once popular location to fill up your gas tank and grab some lunch on Parsons Street has closed recently.
The Shell gas station/Brewster Farms convenience store, adjacent to the main entrance to Skyway Industrial Park went out of business last month and its previous owner said he just couldn’t compete with the competition. Operators had posted posted signs in the window several weeks earlier, announcing the pending closing.
“The location was very good before when I signed, but next door Save-A-Lot opened, then they open a gas pump. The restaurant opened and my sales went down,” former Shell acting assistant manager Ali said. “Slowly, slowly, day by day sales went down, down, down … unfortunately we had to close. It’s hard to survive.”
The sign outside the the closed gas station reads “temporarily closed,” according to Ali.
The Dead River Company owns the property. Officials there did not respond to requests for comment.
Ali also owns the Shell station on North Road in Houlton, which is still open. That facility shares space with an independently operated Dunkin Donuts franchise.
