Frank Mahan Jr., or “Sam,” as he is more commonly known, recently completed his fourth term on the Mars Hill Town Council.
First elected in March of 2004, he served three terms until he reached the end of the three-term limit imposed by the town charter. He returned again a year later and was elected to his fourth and final term.
Mahan served during periods of change in Mars Hill, from the construction of a new fire station and development of the First Wind turbines, to the approval of a TIF for Pineland Farms which led to unprecedented growth at this facility, to the approval of a new sand/salt shed for the town. Mahan always believed that he voted for the best interests of Mars Hill, even if he was in the minority, and his popularity with the residents tended to reflect that position.
He has been married for 65 years to his “long-suffering” wife, Dawn, and has always lived in the Mars Hill area. They have eight children, 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
