DANFORTH, Maine — Paige Young, a senior East Grand School, and Principal Margaret White attended the Maine Principal’s Award luncheon on Saturday, April 8, at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.
Young was the 2017 recipient of the Maine Principal’s Award. This award is given each year in recognition of a high school senior’s academic excellence and good citizenship. Each student received a plaque and lapel pin in recognition of his/her achievement.
“Paige is highly deserving of this award, over the years she has shown her dedication to her academics, achieving class valedictorian, as well as spearheading many community events,” White said.
Young was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of five. “As I grew older, I became more intrigued with the idea of finding a cure,” she said. “I initiated an annual walk-a-thon to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.) For the past five years I have been the leader of Team Paige. My responsibilities have included; creating posters and advertisements, gathering sponsors for t-shirts, collecting donations, lining up safety patrol with the fire department, managing the walk, and ensuring all the money that was raised is sent to JDRF.”
Young’s other activities include being a National Honor Society member for three years, varsity soccer player for five years with two years as captain, and class of 2017 class treasurer for five years. Her accomplishments include Phi Bet Kappa member, State of Maine Citizenship Award,
Dartmouth Alumni Club Book Award, as well as most recently being awarded Maine Top Scholars Scholarship.
Young is the daughter of Lynette and Eric Young of Danforth. She graduates with 15 college credits and plans on attending either Husson University or the University of Maine majoring in accounting.
The honors luncheon recognized the outstanding senior students and awarded multiple $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, former Maine principals and MPA executive directors. Additional $1,000 scholarships were presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament. In all 11 scholarships were awarded.
The Maine Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
