100 Years Ago – April 18, 1917
Accepted position — Benj. Carson, formerly clerk at the Grange store, has accepted a position as traveling salesman for the B. B. Farnsworth Shoe Co., succeeding Fred N. Vose.
New trucks — Two very neat motor trucks have been turned out this week by Huggard Bros. One is for the Snell House and will be used for transferring baggage. The second is for Chas. W. Starkey and will be devoted to delivering goods from his store and slaughter house.
75 Years Ago – April 16, 1942
Winner — Miss Edith Dickinson, senior and co-salutatorian at Houlton High School, won the district preliminary Lydia Spear prize speaking contest in the Stearns High School auditorium with the selection, ‘The Barretts of Wimpole Street.’ Second award went to Mary Elizabeth Soule of Smyrna Mills, who gave, ‘Camille.’
New job — Mrs. Carl Pettengill is employed with Katahdin Trust Co. in Island Falls, in the postion recently vacated by Clarence Thorne, Jr., who enlisted in the Navy.
50 Years Ago – April 19 , 1967
Trip — James D. Carr, chairman of the Houlton Republican Town Committee, presents a check to Anthony McLaughlin to cover part of the cost of sending high school students on a trip to the Maine Legislature in Augusta. Mr. McLaughlin and William Miller accompanied the students on the all-day trip. The students are members of the social studies department at Houlton High School.
Planning session — Members of the Houlton High School band have been busy planning for exchange concerts with the band from Mt. Desert High School of Northeast Harbor. In the planning meeting were: Cheryl Leavitt, Jackie Ouellet, Band president, Larry Houlmes and Cindy Buzza.
25 Years Ago – April 15, 1992
Tradition— Houlton resident Gerald Jackins has been making maple syrup just about every spring for 20 years now. One of Jackson’s favorite activities is showing youths how clear sap from a maple tree is turned into the sweet syrup they love to eat. St. Mary’s grade 1 student, Danielle Nadeau is one such student who was given the chance to lean over and smell the sweet syrup as it was being made.
Gift certificate winner — Pearl Sennett was the winner of a $100 gift certificate from County Yankee. John Pasquarelli, owner of County Yankee, presented Pearl with the certificate while Pearl’s husband, John, was in attendance. The Sennetts are residents of Houlton.
