BANGOR, Maine — The Caribou tennis teams took on John Bapst Saturday, April 15, in their regular season debuts and it proved to be a strong start for Viking coach John Habeeb’s squads.

The girls captured a 5-0 win, while the boys were able to eke out a 3-2 decision. Due to snow-covered home courts, Caribou went into the matches having only played outdoors three times during the preseason.

The Viking girls prevailed behind wins in singles by Gabrielle Marquis, Kelly Nicklaus and Conner Spencer and in doubles by Ashley Matlock-Hailey Holmquist and Ciara Richards-Danielle Hanson.

Marquis had a tough match with John Bapst’s Crystal Bell, but came out on top, 8-6. Spencer was challenged by Grace Harman but still won, 8-5. The Crusaders picked up just one game in each of the other three matches.

The Viking boys were led by their two doubles teams and third singles player as they upended the hosts.

Gabe Rand and Seth Beidelman bested Tom Carmack and Dixon Rand, 8-6, in the first doubles match, while Parker Deprey and Aiden Plante cruised past Duncan Waanders and Chris Chappelle, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles.

Caribou’s Bailey Griffeth stopped John Bapst’s Tien Duong, 8-6, in third singles.

Neither Alec Cyr and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr were able to win a single game against their Crusader foes, Paul Branch and Darren Hanscomb.

The Vikings have another road trip this coming Saturday as they take on Washington Academy in East Machias beginning at 1 p.m.
