The 21st Century Issues class at Easton High School recently completed a study on hunger and homelessness.

Steve Eyler of the Sister Mary O’Donnell Shelter in Presque Isle gave a presentation and the students completed a research project about both issues.

Dixie Shaw of the Catholic Charities Food Bank visited the class on April 14 and shared with students that this food bank supplies every food pantry in the area.

Their service learning project, Project Pie, was a fundraiser which involved each class competing to raise money for the food bank program. The group’s goal was to raise $300 in a week, and they shattered that goal by raising $660.50.

At the end of the week, the winning groups got to throw six pies total at history teacher Darren West.

The students will perform a day of service for the Homeless Shelter and Catholic Charities on Monday, April 24. This project corresponds to the Maine Learning Results standard “Taking Action”.

Homeless Shelter donation

The National Honor Society at Easton High School decided at the end of last school year to collect items the shelter required and used on a regular basis. The Easton group enlisted the help of other schools in Aroostook County that make up the Northern Region of the National Honor Society.

In the end, the items collected filled nearly half of a school bus. The boxes held multiple supplies, including paper towels, bath towels, washcloths, cleaning supplies, coffee filters and much more.

Shelter staff expressed thanks to all the County NHS chapters who participated, including students, teachers, parents and everyone involved.

Library Hours

The Community Library will be open this week on Wednesday, April 19, at the elementary school from 12:30 to 3 p.m., and will be closed on Saturday, April 22.

The regular schedule will resume next week.
