KENTS HILL, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team is now 13-9 on the season following a split of a doubleheader played Monday, April 17 in Kents Hill.
The Owls defeated UM-Farmington in the first game, 3-2, but the Beavers took game two, 7-5.
In the opener, UMPI came from behind for the victory. Trailing 2-0, Sara Packard hit a home run in the second inning to get the Owls within a run. Nicole Marruci’s double in the fifth drove in Packard for the tying run and Brianna Losee singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
Packard went 3 for 3 and scored all of UMPI’s runs. She also struck out 13 batters and surrendered just three hits and one walk to earn the pitching victory.
In game two, the Owls again trailed early, this time by a 3-1 margin, but Packard ripped a two-run double to spark a four-run outburst in the third inning. However, UMF tied the game in the bottom of the inning and scored two more in the sixth to take the lead for good.
