DAR names youth Good Citizens

WHITING, Maine — The Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, honored eight Washington County high school seniors selected by their respective schools during the annual DAR Good Citizen reception held Tuesday, April 4, at Whiting Community Center.

The students had been named by the faculty and students as the school DAR Good Citizen for 2017 and were sponsored by the chapter in the state-wide selection of the 2017 Maine DAR Good Citizen. To be eligible as a DAR Good Citizen, the students must possess to an outstanding degree qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Carole Sprague, DAR Good Citizen chair, introduced the young people and spoke on the accomplishments of each student, followed by the parents presenting each with their DAR Good Citizen pin. The young people also received a cash award from the chapter and a certificate from the National Society DAR.

The 2017 DAR Good Citizens honored were:  Samuel Plummer of East Grand High School, Danforth, the son of Alfred and Jill Plummer of Brookton; Jonathan Lander of Calais High School, son of Jon and Jenn Lander of Calais; Joseph Michael McDonald of Jonesport-Beals High School, son of Joseph and Belinda McDonald  of Jonesport; Mark Anthony of Machias Memorial High School, son of Justin Anthony and Beth Forsing of Machias; Rosemary Nguyen of Narraguagus High School of Harrington, daughter of Christina Nguyen of Harrington; Matthew Harris of Shead High School, Eastport, son of Butch and Janna Harris of Eastport; Jaiden Elmenia Veal of Washington Academy, East Machias, daughter of Pauline Loa of Perry; and Sophia Faith McDonald of Woodland Jr/Sr High School of Baileyville, daughter of Carried Perkins and Dan McDonald of Baileyville.
