PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A man who was walking door-to-door in the city on Wednesday may have been trying to get people’s financial information from their electricity bills.
Kimberly Sebold was preparing to leave for work Wednesday morning when a man approached her in her front yard.
“I’m from Emera and want to talk to you about your price protection plan,” the man said, according to Sebold, who said he also asked to see her monthly utility bill.
Sebold said she had to go to work and could not speak with him, and he said he would return in the early evening.
As he went on to the next house, “I started thinking, why wouldn’t Emera just send me an email?” Sebold said. “I’m going to call Emera and see if it’s real.”
Emera confirmed with Sebold that the company had sent no such representative out to talk about price protection, and that the man was possibly trying to steal people’s financial information.
Sebold called the Presque Isle Police Department, which asked Sebold to call back if the man returned in the evening, as he said he would.
“He tried to sound official but he didn’t look very official,” Sebold said.
