Bishop Deeley issues Earth Day message

PORTLAND, Maine — Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22, and Bishop Robert P. Deeley of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland on Thursday, April 20, issued the following message:

“On Earth Day, it is good to remind ourselves that there is a strong connection between the way in which we interact with our natural world and the way we relate to fellow human beings. Our actions involve not only ourselves, but other human beings with whom we share the earth, which is God’s creation and our common home under his care and love,” the bishop said.

“The care of the mystery and glory of nature has been placed in our hands. We show our respect for God by our stewardship of that creation, living our faith through the protection of each person’s human dignity and our environment. By conserving the divine harmony between our place in the universe and each other, we can truly live in solidarity and peace.”

“The Lord God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it” (Genesis 2:15).
