Trees — Over one hundred trees have been set out on Teague Park this spring already, and the committee in charge intend to set out several hundred more.
100 Years Ago – Apr. 26, 1917
Long journey — Automobiles came from Presque Isle to Caribou on April 14 last year. The date will be a week or two later this year on account of there being so much snow in the country roads, especially in a few big drifts.
Special train — A special train will be run from Caribou to Presque Isle on May 16, for the benefit of those who wish to hear Ex-President Howard Taft who will speak in that town.
75 Years Ago – Apr. 22, 1942
New A&P opened — The new A&P Self-Service Supermarket opened today which has been completed on Washburn Ave., Caribou. The construction work on this store was under the supervision of local men. This store is one of the most modern and convenient in Caribou. Chain stores, according to A&P district superintendent Mr. Wakefield, are improving more and more every day to be good tenants and tend to increase rental values in their locations.
Blackout successful — Caribou’s first total blackout staged Monday night for a 15-minute period from 8:20 to 8:35 was pronounced a definite success by local Civilian Defense Chairman, Grover M. Hardison and Chief Air Raid Warden, Steven G. Leonard. On sounding of three blasts from the fire horn at 8:05, over 200 defense workers all hastened to their various posts within the village limits.
50 Years Ago – Apr. 26, 1967
Lights on — A new floodlighting system of the Teague Park playground, a long cherished hope of the Caribou Recreation Department, will soon become become reality, according to Allan Cousins, recreation director. Cousins said the project, underway for four years, was “taken off the ground” by a Lights-for-Teague Park Committee, which was raised $1,000 in solicitation from merchants and individuals to date.
Blanchette named Valedictorian — Candace Blanchette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludger Blanchette, has been named Valedictorian of this year’s graduating class at Caribou High School. The valedictorian this year has been active in Student Council, Vocation Club, served as a Girls’ State alternate and is a member of the National Latin Honor Society. She plans to attend the University of Maine majoring in English.
25 Years Ago – Apr. 22, 1992
Stars Wars base — Speculation that Loring Air Force Base might become a ground-based missile site became plausible after a “Star Wars” official told a Senate committee the initial site might the location in the northeastern United States. Henry F. Cooper, director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO), or the Pentagon agency in charge of the “Star Wars” project, reportedly told the Armed Services Committee that “a site in the Northeast followed by a northern site would eliminate the need for a site at Grand Forks”
Teacher cited — Franklin R. McElwain of Caribou has been selected to receive the “Distinguished Service Award” given annually at the annual stockholders meeting of Farm Credit of Aroostook. McElwain has been recognized over the past years and has received a number of professional awards over the years. He resides in Caribou with his wife, Joan, who is employed as a medical technologist and with their three children Diana, Lauren and Spencer.
