Makaila Beck had two hits for Fort Fairfield.

Houlton 16, Orono 14 — At Orono, the Shires beat Orono in a high-scoring game. Individual results were not reported.

Baseball

Katahdin 19, Penobscot Valley 2 — At Howland, Katahdin blasted the Howlers in a five-inning game shortened via the mercy rule. Cooper Drew pitched the win, scattering two earned runs on three hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts.

Leading the hit parade for the Cougars were: Brody Guiggey (double, single, 5 runs scored), Dalton Hart (2 doubles), Drew (2 singles), John McNally (2 singles), Blake Howes (double, single) and Chase Tapley (single, double).

For PVHS, J. Littlefield, J. Folster and Z. Doore each had one hit.

Hodgdon 24, Washburn 0 — At Hodgdon,   Ben Tuttle, Wyatt Foster and Kyle Carver combined for five innings of no-hit baseball as the Hawks cruised to the five-inning victory.

Dillon Buzzell led Hodgdon offensively with three doubles and five RBIs, while Jordyn Merritt provided three singles and four runs scored.

Washburn results were not reported.

Fort Fairfield 8, Southern Aroostook 3 — At Fort Fairfield, Carter Bruce scattered nine hits and tossed the complete game as the Tigers beat the Warriors. Joe Bernard doubled and singled and Malcolm Langner singled twice for Fort Fairfield. Ryan Player legged out a triple.

Noah Altvater led Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook with a double and two singles and Gavin Vining hit two singles.

Orono 3, Houlton 2 — At Orono, the Shires fell in their season-opener in extra innings. Shire Cam Graham started and went six and two-thirds innings before giving way to reliever Pat Howe.

“We played good defense, only one error and that runner did not score, and we pitched pretty well too,” Houlton coach Jim Castner said. “However, we did not hit enough. We put up two runs in the first and that was it. The reason we lost is because the ‘Baseball Gods’ were not on our side. We hit the ball on the screws five or six times right at Orono fielders. Also close calls did not fall our way.”

Castner said the team was unhappy with the loss, but were positive and are hungry for their next game.

“They knew it was unrealistic to go back-to-back 16-0 regular seasons, so they are not down,” he said. “I am confident we can be a dominant baseball team.”

The following games were slated to be played Wednesday, April 26 but now have make-up dates. Houlton at Caribou baseball and softball has been postponed to Thursday, at 4 p.m., while Ashland baseball and softball is scheduled to be at Southern Aroostook on Wednesday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.
