Students take part in the East Grand outdoor education class

An offering for upper classmen taking the East Grand outdoor education class, students from East Grand School recently took part in a 10-hour guide’s training course with Fritz Todenhagen, owner of Finn and Antlers Outdoor Courses in Molunkus.

Topics covered included map and compass, waterfowl and plant identification, wild edibles, catastrophic events, lost person scenario, wilderness survival, Maine boating laws, and a review of 100 sample test questions. While much of what students learn in the East Grand’s outdoor education class prepares them for the Maine guide’s test, Todenhagen’s course concentrates on what they will need to know when testing. During the 2017-18 school year, East Grand will offer juniors and seniors taking the outdoor education class the same opportunity to prepare for their guide’s test. Taking part are, from left, Ashley Grenier, outdoor education instructor and guide Tammi Matula, East Grand outdoor education students, Matthew Potter, Philip Farley, Aaron Sixberry and Finn and Antler’s instructor Fritz Todenhagen.
