HOULTON, Maine — Seventeen new members were welcomed Monday evening into the Houlton High School National Honor Society during a special induction ceremony at the school’s auditorium.

“These students have not only achieved a 90 or better average, but have also demonstrated leadership, service and good character,” Newman said.
Newman then reviewed the four pillars of the
. To be a member requires students to adhere to a code of conduct that is set forth by the council at school to represent the pillars of character, scholarship, leadership and service.
“Scholarship means a commitment to learning,” she explained. “A student must be willing to spend hours reading and studying, knowing the lasting benefits will be a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn when formal education has ended, for education only truly ends with the end of life.”

“Service can be described in various ways,” Newman continued. “In the routine of a day’s work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or recognition is the quality we seek in our membership.”
Leadership she said is always needed and is a substantive charge to each new member of the NHS.
“Character gives each one of us individuality,” Newman said. “It is this force of character that guides one through life. Character is achieved and not received. It is a product of constant action and daily striving to make the right choice.”
