NWS issues spring flood watch

CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service Office in Caribou has issued a flood watch for northeast, northwest, and southeast Aroostook County, as well as portions of Penobscot, Piscataquis and northern Somerset counties.

The flood watch is in effect from Monday morning, May 1, through Tuesday evening, May 2.

Rain and snow will overspread the area late tonight and change to all rain by Monday afternoon. Periods of rain will continue Monday night and Tuesday, with rainfall totals of 1 to 1.5 inches, with local amounts that may approach 2 inches.

Streams, ponds, and lakes are already running high. The additional rainfall will likely cause areas of minor flooding. At this time, main stem rivers are expected to experience within bank rises, but may come close to bankfull in spots on Tuesday.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. Residents should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
