Shires track athletes off to strong start

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton track and field team finally had the chance to compete in a meet Saturday.

“We had a wonderful first meet of the season this last Saturday at Foxcroft Academy,” said Chris Rines. “Despite the soggy landscape and high winds the weather was very pleasant and it really shaped up to be a great day for some track and field.”

The Houlton boys finished third out of nine teams in their season-opener, while the girls’ team placed fourth out of eight teams, while the GHCA girls finished fifth.

Members of the Houlton boys’ squad include Zack Gonya, Thomas Astle, Jeremy Cook, Jacob Forest, Dylan Swimm, Daniel McNally, Austin Brown, Isaiah Brown, Timothy Glatter and Josiah Sherwood.

Members of the Shire girls’ squad include Isabelle Cosby, Alyssa Abbotoni, Sarah Glatter, Gabriella Guiod, Lauren Swimm, Mia Hanning, Chloe Davis, Hannah Foley, Makenzie Hunt, Kate Newman and Rylee Warman.

Also training and competing with Houlton this year is Hodgdon’s Joel Bond, along with Greater Houlton Christian Academy athletes Teagan Ewings, Isaac Potter, Cole Winslow, Jillian Ross, Wesley Ganglefinger, Grace Graham and Bridget Hill.

Individual results from Saturday’s meet for local boy athletes were as follows:

100 meter dash — 3, A. Brown, 12.66; 9, Thomas Astle, 13.32; 19, Daniel McNally, 13.93; and 28, Zack Gonya, 15.30.

1,600 meter — 1, I. Brown, 5:00.46; 3, Bond, 5:25.97; 7, Cook, 6:08.22; and 9, Potter, 6:18.18.

400 meter —  4, Astle, 1:01.13.  

300 hurdles —  6, Winslow, 51.16.

800 meter —  1, I. Brown, 2:14.91; 4, Cook, 2:44.83; and 12, Potter, 2:58.67.

“Tim [Glatter] took his first ever victories in the javelin and in his debut at the triple jump, while also setting new personal bests and modern school records in each,” coach Rines said. “His javelin throw busted his old record by a whopping 20 feet 8 inches.”

“The Shire [girls] had plenty of good things happen on their end adding up 40 total points,” Rines said. “Making her track and field debut was Mackenzie Hunt who stepped up with 17.5 points of her own and had a solid first showing.”
