Parents bring kids to work for company’s career day

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — MMG Insurance hosted more than 30 students on Thursday, April 27, as part of national Take Our Daughters And Sons to Work Day.  Children ages 12 to 18 were invited to spend the morning at MMG, participating in various activities and exploring different careers within the insurance industry.

This was MMG’s first such event in conjunction with the national program.

“We were thrilled to have more than 30 students from around the County involved as we engaged them in a full morning of activities and learning opportunities,” said communications coordinator Laura Martin in a press release.

“Building awareness is key to curbing the challenges our communities are presented with by outmigration and a declining population,” Martin said. “Efforts such as TODASTWD are imperative in ensuring Aroostook County is seen as a viable place to live and work for future generations.”

The interactive experience also included tours of the company headquarters, business skill-building exercises and the opportunity to spend time with the family members whom they accompanied to work. Designed to be more than a career day, TODASTWD shows students the value of their education and helps them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life.

As a major local business leader, MMG officials said in a press release, the company recognizes the need to demonstrate the career opportunities available to students right in their backyard.

“This was a great way to showcase future career opportunities to one of Aroostook County’s most valuable resources – our children,” said John Herweh, vice president of human resources at MMG. “The County has some of the most educated, respectful, well-mannered, and dedicated students in the country and we want to show them possible career paths they could explore with MMG.

“Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, with the support of our local schools, helps us achieve that mission,” Herweh said.

Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day is celebrated by employers across the country as a chance for young people to see what the adults in their lives do every day. The TODASTW Foundation is dedicated to developing innovative strategies and research-based activities in informal education programs that empower girls and boys in all sectors of society to confront and overcome conflicting societal messages about youth so they may reach their full potential and live fulfilling lives.
