Rotary Club
This week, the Mars Hill Rotary Club met Wednesday morning, April 26 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The club celebrates their 60th anniversary this day.
The special speaker was Aron Chalou, nurse-manager of the County Dialysis Center.
She spoke about the center and the updated facility. It has gone from 3,900 square feet of space serving 12 patients in 1997 to 7,000 square feet, serving 72, today. They now have 12 stations in a bright environment, making it more comfortable for those undergoing treatments as they each are four hours long, taking place three times a week.
The facility’s hours are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. six days a week. They are closed only on Christmas and Thanksgiving, but are open on Sunday of those weeks to serve their patients.
Center staff are very thankful to the county population for supporting the center, which is the only non-profit center in Maine. They are rated as a national 5-Star Quality Care Center, which takes in several qualifications.
Chalou states that the continued needs she sees for her patients are transportation and food security. Some have trouble finding rides to and from the facility if they don’t have their own vehicle or if theirs breaks down. Others find themselves having to choose between paying for gas, medicines, utilities, co-pays, and food, with food usually being the one to suffer.
Those interested in touring the facility may call and set up a time to stop by.
