PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Wildcat boys’ tennis team lost plenty of firepower from last year’s team, yet are still off to a 2-0 start.
PI bested Washington Academy at home Satur
day, 5-0, as Andre Daigle stopped Eric Smith in first singles, 8-6, while Jordan Bonville rolled over Noah Caron, 8-1, and Mason Young bested Joey Moore, 8-3, in the other singles matches.
The first doubles team of Gage Young and Isaac Madore was too much for Ian Squire and Finn Sunde, winning 8-3. In No. 2 doubles, the PI combination of Austin Moreau and Brandon McKnight held off WA’s Zach Chin and Noah Huang, 8-6.
“It’s really hard to gauge where we are at [through two matches],” said PI coach Brian Massey. “I will say that we play through every point and I like how we play through adversity.”
The Wildcat girls claimed their first win by stopping the Raiders, 3-2.
PI senior Sarah Morneault blanked WA’s Cameryn Farnsworth in first singles, 8-0, while Miranda Bragan and Hana Boucher both doubled up on their opponents by 8-4 scores.
The Wildcats’ only doubles team of Anna Robinson and Gabby Haley were stopped by the Raiders’ Maggie Hood and Kate Somes, 9-7. Presque Isle forfeited its No. 2 doubles match.
“I was very pleased with the team’s performance,” said PI coach Monica Bearden. “We’ve only had a couple days of outside practice, so it’s nice to be on the courts and pull off a win.”
Presque Isle travels to Caribou Thursday for a 2 p.m. match and then plays at Houlton Friday at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, Old Town makes the trip north for a noontime start and on Monday the Wildcats play a doubleheader at Madawaska beginning at 3:30 p.m.
